The heating turnaround in Austria is only making slow progress.

  • Over 800,000 gas heating systems are installed in Austrian households, half of them in Vienna alone.
  • Tyrol has the most oil heating systems, with 28 per 100 households.
  • In addition to renovating houses, measures for the heating transition also include switching from fossil heating systems such as oil and gas to more environmentally friendly alternatives.
  • District heating is also still partly generated from the combustion of fossil fuels, and rapid decarbonization is required here.

Historical Heating Transition

The heating transition in Austria is progressing slowly.

Since 2006, the number of climate-damaging gas heating systems in Austria has remained constant at around 900,000, with Vienna holding the highest share. Within the same period, 400,000 fewer households are using oil for heating, and 400,000 households have switched to environmentally friendly heat pumps.

Regional Heating Transition

The challenges in the heating transition vary greatly by region.

Vienna has the highest proportion of households receiving their heat from gas heating and district heating, while Vorarlberg has held the highest proportion per 100 households of climate-friendly heat pumps since 2006.

Oil Heating Systems: Replacement per Day

On average, 119 oil heating systems need to be replaced per day for Austria to have all oil heating systems replaced by 2035 as intended by the government. In 2022, there were 521,306 oil heating systems installed in Austria.

Gas heaters: Replacement per day

On average, 141 gas heaters need to be replaced per day for Austria to have all gas heaters replaced by 2040 as intended by the government. In 2022, there were 878,319 gas heaters installed in Austria.

Questions and Answers

  • What standards does the climate dashboard work to?

Each of our graphics or visualizations contains a reference to the data source used so that it is possible to classify and understand the credibility, timeliness and relevance of the data and to research it if interested. We primarily visualize data from public authorities and recognized scientific institutions. Our visualizations are created in close cooperation with experts from the respective fields.

  • May graphics and data be reused?

All charts and visualisations are licensed under CC BY license and can be freely reused as long as attribution is provided, whether for teaching, reporting or other purposes. Each chart can be exported as an image or interactive iFrame in the top right-hand corner. In addition, we link to the raw data set for almost all graphics. You are welcome to use these data sets to create your own graphics, provided you refer to the original source (and observe the respective provisions of the source). If you have any questions, please contact the team at team@klimadashboard.org.

  • Who is building the climate dashboard and how is it financed?

The climate crisis is complex and much of the data remains inaccessible. We make it understandable - with interactive visualizations for politics, media and civil society. Challenges, consequences, solutions: compact and clearly presented.

The climate dashboard is a non-profit, interdisciplinary project combining design, science, communication and technology - freely accessible, without a paywall. Made possible by voluntary work, prize money and donations.

  • What are the goals of the climate dashboard?

The aim of our work is to use data and facts to classify compliance with the Paris Climate Agreement and the associated transformations so that they can be scientifically sound and socially just. We want to be a reliable source of current and regional data on the climate crisis. In addition to civil society as a whole, we particularly address media professionals, teachers and political decision-makers, whereby we want to promote data-based reporting and science-based climate policy. To this end, we are constantly working on new visualizations and are in regular exchange with science, media, politics and civil society - but always independent in terms of content.

  • How do I quote graphics from the climate dashboard?

You are welcome to use graphics from the climate dashboard in scientific papers or other publications. For example, if you would like to use the graphic on production-related emissions in Germany, cite it as follows:

Klimadashboard. (n.d.). Production-based emissions. Klimadashboard Deutschland. Retrieved on [day] [month] [year] from https://klimadashboard.de/emissionen
